Kansas SCBWI is supporting Reach Out and Read® in 2007. Bring books for ages 5 and under to donate at our May 8th Quarterly Event or at our June 23rd conference. Or support this cause by purchasing bottled water or specialty handmade bookmarks* at the conference. Water will be $1 per bottle and the bookmarks, with book related quotes, $5. All profits will go to Reach Out and Read.

Reach Out and Read Kansas City makes literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric care so that children 6 months to five years of age grow up with books. The program helps families and communities cultivate early literacy skills so that children enter school prepared to succeed at reading. A special focus is placed on children growing up in poverty.

Children get to take home a free, new, developmentally appropriate book at every check-up from birth to five years. Books are also given to siblings and placed in hospital waiting rooms.

  • ROR-KC has 37 sites in the Kansas City metropolitan area
  • 80% of children served by ROR-KC live in poverty
  • ROR-KC serves over 20,000 children each year
  • Over 50,000 new books are distributed to children each year
  • Over 30,000 used books are distributed to siblings each year
