Clare Vanderpool Work of Promise Scholarship
Kansas SCBWI is pleased to announce its new scholarship in honor of the 2011 Newbery Award winner, Clare Vanderpool. The first scholarship is available for the SCBWI Kansas 2012 Fall Conference, to be held in Overland Park, Kansas.
The scholarship includes: admittance to the conference, lunch, and a one-on-one consultation with an editor or agent of the recipient’s choice. The scholarship is available to SCBWI members (published or not yet published) who live in Kansas or in the Kansas-Missouri metro area. Members must have a financial need as well as an interest in writing and/or illustrating for children. Applications must be received by March 15, 2012.
A committee of published writers will select the winner. Kansas SCBWI will notify the winner by May 1, 2012.
Please note: Scholarship recipients are not eligible for future scholarships.
How to Apply for the Scholarship
Via Email
- Fill out the application form and “save as” using your first and last names and the word scholarship (i.e. Jane Doe Scholarship) -- it's fine if your information and answers make the form flow to a second page.
- Do NOT put your name on your submission pages or artwork. (If you do, you’ll be disqualified).
- Email your application, your cover page and your submission pages or artwork as separate attachments to ks_scbwi@yahoo.com, subject line: Scholarship Application.
Via Postal Mail
- Print and fill out the application form and paper clip it to your cover page and submission pages.
- Do NOT put your name on your submission pages or artwork. (If you do, you’ll be disqualified).
- Include four (4) copies of all materials.

Instructions for Submitting Sample Work
Do not include your name on your work. (If you do, you’ll be disqualified).
Writers
Submit your manuscripts in standard manuscript format, except for your name, address and contact info.
- first ten pages of a novel (MG or YA) or a chapter book, or
- a picture book manuscript (no more than 1000 words), or
- a magazine article or short story, including to whom you intend to submit
Illustrators
Submit color copies (No original artwork!) or jpgs.
- a minimum of three images of your work (no more than ten images), or
- a picture book dummy, or
- three character sketches and one finished image
Deadline: Applications must be RECEIVED by March 15, 2012
Any submission that is not in compliance with the rules will be disqualified.
