*SCBWI designates its members based on their publication history. Members who have yet to publish in the children's market are "Associates." Members published in the children's market are "Published" or "Published and Listed" (PAL). PAL publishers are those companies that meet this criteria:

P.A.L. Publisher Guidelines

  1. That the author/illustrator shall not have paid any money or consideration for the publication of their work in any format. This would eliminate all vanity publishing and subsidy publishing.
  2. That the publisher (whether traditional or new media) has a professional editorial process prior to publication, at no charge to the author/illustrator.
  3. That there exists a means of broad distribution to the retail customer.
  4. That the publisher must publish works from more than one author or family.
  5. That the publisher must have published at least one prior list, or in the case of a digital publisher, have been in business for a minimum of one year.
  6. That the publisher, whether traditional or new media, provides a means of marketing at no cost to the author illustrator.
